WikipediaのSocial Networkの項を読んでいて発見した。
The so-called rule of 150 states that the size of a genuine social network is limited to about 150 members (sometimes called the Dunbar Number (http://www.lifewithalacrity.com/2004/03/the_dunbar_numb.html)). The rule arises from cross-cultural studies in sociology and especially anthropology of the maximum size of a village (in modern parlance most reasonably understood as an ecovillage). It is theorized in evolutionary psychology that the number may be some kind of limit of average human ability to recognize members and track emotional facts about all members of a group. However, it may be due to economics and the need to track "free riders", as larger groups tend to be easier for cheats and liars to prosper in.
という段落を読んで、MSN Messengerに登録できる友達の数が・・・Version 7では300人になったようですが・・・150人だったのと結びつきました。
上のリンクのBlog (by Christopher Allen) 経由でたどり着けるR.I.M. Dunbar（Department of Anthropology, University College Londonの学者）の、オリジナルの論文「CO-EVOLUTION OF NEOCORTEX SIZE, GROUP SIZE AND LANGUAGE IN HUMANS」を・・・skimmingだけど・・・:P)読むと、非常に面白い。
... there is a cognitive limit to the number of individuals with whom any one person can maintain stable relationships, that this limit is a direct function of relative neocortex size, and that this in turn limits group size ... the limit imposed by neocortical processing capacity is simply on the number of individuals with whom a stable inter-personal relationship can be maintained....
「安定した関係を気づける」グループの人数が、脳における大脳新皮質（neocortex: 間違ってたらすいません）の（それ以外に対する）割合と関係してくるっていう仮説です。Dunbarは、いろいろな霊長類のグループ（群れ？）を観察して、彼らの群れの大きさと、彼らの脳内の大脳新皮質の割合を調べた。そうするとAllenのblogに出ているようなグラフが浮き上がってきて、それを元に人間の場合を算出したところ、グループ人数は「147.8」になった。これが実際、多くの文化の部族や村の大きさのcensus dataとマッチするという・・・。
ただ、リンク先ブログのChristopher Allenによれば、rule of 150だのthe Dunbar numberだの言われるこの数字も、だんだんと違う意味にも拡大解釈されちゃってきているようです。（ちょうどsocial networkに関するMilgramの「６次元」という数が、いつのまにか「世界の人は6次元で全部つながる」という理論に拡大解釈されて広まっちゃってきてるように。） 最近では、この150という数字が「オンラインネットワークやグループの平均的規模」という風に使われるようになったが、「However, Dunbar's work itself suggests that a community size of 150 will not be a mean for a community unless it is highly incentivized to remain together. 」という風に言っています。
・・・んで、「MSNメッセンジャーの友達人数が最大150人だった理由」がこれなのかを、ぐぐって調べたけど、イマイチ明確な答えは見つからなかった・・・:P) たぶんそうなんじゃないかなぁって思うけど。だれかソース持っていたらきぼんぬ。
